I tried to use your recommended method of upgrading SA using cpan but it failed again this time giving an error about the script version not matching the SA version. So here is what I did to get it installed:
First I checked the /usr/local/bin and the new sa-compile, sa-update, sa-compile, etc files for version 3.2.5 had been installed there instead of in /usr/bin. So I tried moving those files to the correct location but that still did not fix the problem. Next I downloaded the install file from spamassassin.apache.org and built and installed it manually. All the above was done while logged into the system as root. This appears to have solved the problem because SA is up and running. I will now try a reboot and see if it starts up properly.
